When we were kids attending Sunday service, our Mom always made sure each of us had a coin to put into the collection basket when passed around the congregation.

After becoming a parent with kids of our own to teach, I realized she was instilling in us the “Art of Giving.”

Years later my wife reminded me about another principle of the “Art of Giving.” When we lived on the beautiful island of Kauai, every Thanksgiving Day, she would wake up early in the morning to get the turkey stuffed and ready for the oven. She spent hours prepping the sweet potatoes, cranberries and pumpkin pie.
Only it wasn’t for our own family Thanksgiving dinner as we used to celebrate when our kids were still at home. My assignment was to drop off everything packed in a cooler for those living at the roadside who would miss the holiday meal.

Hopefully our grandkids will remember some of the lessons we try to pass on…
Give what you can… Give what you enjoy…
Give without being asked…
